Hacienda Paradiso

Several years ago, while browsing at a thrift store, Maureen and I came across a series of old books called Out of This World – The Illustrated Library of the Bizarre and Extraordinary. One of the stories contained within the collection was the amazing account of a group of Germans who decided to abandon civilization and move to an island in the Galapagos in order to create a utopian society. Intrigued by the cast of eccentric characters and the mysterious events that transpired on the island, I decided to do some of my own research and soon discovered a goldmine of letters, photos and film at the USC library.
Over the course of several years, I took the raw material of this incredible story and turned it into a slightly fictionalized account in the form of a play which I finally completed during a stay at the Yaddo artists’ retreat in Saratoga Springs New York.
